When using the "Direct to" function on the iPad it is only possible to select airfields. It would be great if it would be possible to select IFR waypoint (and possibly VFR reporting points), which are in the vicinity of the planned route.

I mentioned this at the NEC and asked if they could look into it.

It would be most useful.

I figured out a way to fly direct to a Waypoint, but it is rather cumbersome.

I don't fly IFR myself, but friends of mine do. I try to convince them to use skydemon instead of Pocket fms (which supports direct to IFR waypoints).

For those who would like to know how to fly direct to IFR waypoints (on a iPad):

  1. To show the Airways reporting points, click on "Map Layers" (Before you click "Go Flying").
  2. At the bottom of the page you can select "Airways Reporting Points" (slide it to "on"). If you zoom in on the chart, you'll find the waypoints.
  3. When flying (you click "Go Flying"), click on the Skydemon logo (upper left)
  4. Go to "chart"
  5. Go to "Find Waypoint..."
  6. Type the name of the waypoint and click on it. The map will now move to this waypoint and a yellow circle will show.
  7. Hold your finger down on the waypoint and click on the full name of the waypoint
  8. Then select "Route direct"
Unfortunately the original route will now disappear.

When you perform a "direct to" operation, is it not your intention that your original route is entirely replaced by your new instruction?

That is the general idea Tim.

Treat it as a 'get out of jail' move to help with an immediate divert for example. If the rest of the route could be tacked on after that then we would have a system that is very recognisable by many pilots out there.

I was tootling around yesterday and I punched in my home base of Cheddington as a direct to but the SD didn't recognise it. Had I initiated a route before airborne then Cheddington would have been recognised.

Very puzzling!!

My comment was primarily in response to the previous poster who expressed disappointment that the original route would disappear after doing a "direct to".

We do have a plan for a slightly more comprehensive direct to feature that would attempt to alter an existing route where possible, but it will be tricky to get it just right.

My suggestion for continuing the route after going "direct-to" would be one of the following:

1) Continue from the next waypoint at the time the direct-to was instigated (i.e. insert direct-to on current leg)
2) Continue from the nearest waypoint to the direct-to destination (continue to <next waypoint>Wink
3) Continue from the route waypoint which gives the shortest total distance between the direct-to destination and the final destination (continue route to destination)

If I had to choose just one of these options, my preference would be for option 3, however a choice of "insert <direct-to> on current leg", "continue to <next waypoint>" or "continue route to destination" when making the direct-to would be nirvana.

Cheers,
